Naturally, I always start a composition with one image; be it a landscape or object. I then introduce and subtract other elements, during the process to achieve a final result. The initial image might sometimes be rejected in that development. In this case it is the extraordinary sofa in the red wallpapered room. This was below the wheelhouse of a paddle steamer, called ‘Captain Proud’, that was moored at a town called Murray Bridge in Southern Australia, and gave tourists the opportunity to take a trip up the Murray river. The rest of the collage became obvious; RED, and so I introduced other images, filling the river view windows, and a theme developed. I realise this is a vague homage to a Magritte picture; ‘Personal Values’, a favourite of mine. (IR – 84.07 x 42.06cm).
